Not Two Faced But No Face

Unfortunately, I have had little time to post/comment in several days. I could also say that the sheer shock of the blatant ignorance (I am being gracious) of 51% of America has kept me…well, stupefied.

That said, after reading an article in the Washington Post I knew I had to make time for commentary. Following is an excerpt from the WP article.

“A presidential adviser who has spoken about the impending shuffle with West Wing aides said Bush does not plan high-profile nominations but will continue his pattern of naming Cabinet secretaries who — with the notable exception of his national security team — attract little public attention.

“The Bush brand is a few priorities, run out of the White House, with no interference from the Cabinet,” the official said. “The Cabinet does not need a new face because it has no face. The function of the Bush Cabinet is to provide a chorus of support for White House policies and technical expertise for implementing them. It’s like the Nixon Cabinet, without the scandal.””

A bit humorous, don’t you think? Humorous, but true and actually quite troublesome. Everywhere I turn, I find similar characterizations of this administration, yet the people of America put the republic in his hands to manage? God help the international community and us.

No thank you, I don’t care to look into the crystal ball to see the future. It is far too scary.

The “Great Uniter” who quickly proved to be the “Great Divider” had the chutzpah to characterize himself again in the 2004 campaign as a compassionate conservative and a strong leader. First, a true leader has the ability to bring diverse people together and efficiently and effectively achieve an objective – George Bush is no leader. Furthermore, he clearly demonstrated his arrogance and incredibility in just one day from Senator Kerry’s concession speech, “I have plenty of political capital and I am going to spend it.” I hear nothing remotely related to bipartisan or collegial intent in his statement.

I hear, “It’s my way or no way.” This president, according to the pundits, was elected on “moral values”, which is derived from his “faith.” President Bush says he is a Christian (Methodist). He believes in God. To believe in God is to understand and affirm that one is created in the image of God. To be created in the image of God means that we humans have the ability and the privilege of knowing, serving, and loving God, and that we are most fully human when fulfilling our spiritual potential. Every human life is precious to God, and this is exactly how we should treat the people with whom we share the world. I ask you, does the president meet the criteria?
