Bush’s Nephew Arrested

John Ellis Bush, the youngest son of Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, was arrested early Friday and charged with public intoxication and resisting arrest, law enforcement officials in Texas said.

The 21-year-old nephew of President Bush was arrested by the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission at 2:30 a.m. Friday on a corner of Austin’s Sixth Street bar district, said spokesman Roger Wade.

Katrina: Part-Time Job for Rove

From Dan Froomkin of The Washington Post:

Karl Rove managed to tear himself away from his reconstruction duties yesterday for a fundraising visit to Greensboro, N.C.

The Greensboro News and Record reports that he attended a Republican National Committee fundraiser at a private home.

"Guilford County Republican Party Chairman Marcus Kindley said Rove answered questions from guests around the state.

"The Bush administration has been criticized for being slow to respond to the damage spawned by Hurricane Katrina.

"Kindley said Rove reassured the crowd that the full story of the disaster would be told.

" ‘He told us to hang in there,’ Kindley said."

Lampooning Bush

Pretty good editorial creativity (lampooning) on  George Bush at TPM.

War Reporters Viewed as Enemy by US

Michelle Pilecki at The Huffington Post has a good post about the US military detaining and killing Iraqi journalists working for the US press (e.g., Wall Street Journal, CBS).

Michele points out an item I was unaware of or had forgotten - the US military is not subject to Iraqi law. Iraqi Justice Minister Abdul Hussein Shandal has unsuccessfully raised this as an issue. On the surface, this seems to fly in the face of Iraq’s sovereignty which the administration likes to tout when it is to their advantagte.

Changes for Vox Populi

Announcement:  Just wanted to give you a heads up well in advance.  Vox Populi may move to another site and have a robust new design.  It isn’t carved in stone yet because the development is not complete.  Hopefully if everything pans out, we’ll make the move in two weeks or less.

I will keep you updated as things progress.

John Kerry on Bush’s Speech

Albeit late, following is John Kerry’s reponse to the President’s speech Thursday night.

"Leadership isn’t a speech or a toll-free number. Leadership is getting the job done. No American doubts that New Orleans will rise again, they doubt the competence and commitment of this Administration. Weeks after Katrina, Americans want an end to politics-as-usual that leaves them dangerously and unforgivably unprepared. Americans want to know that their government will be there when it counts with leadership that keeps them safe, not speeches in the aftermath to explain away the inexcusable."

Discussion in the VP Pub

Somehow the VP Pub discussion section was disabled for several days.  Bells and whistles should have gone off, but they didn’t…or maybe they just got caught in the rising flood.

My apologies.

"I take full responsibility," but don’t count on anybody getting fired.
