Bush Reneges on Veto Threat

The White House has agreed to go along with Sen. John McCain’s bill banning cruel treatment of terror suspects. Now let’s see if he enforces the requirement.

White House on Novak - Duh?

The White House (aka George Bush) received the kickoff Bob Novak made yesterday and are attempting to get the ball out of the end zone. For the first time, Novak commented on the Plame Wilson CIA leak investigation by saying the president knows or “should know” who outed Valerie Wilson. The White House is playing dumb and says “I don’t know what he’s basing it on.”

Okay, so they don’t know what he bases his statement on. That’s not a response. No the president doesn’t know or yes the president does know are responses. Carefully scripted weasel words I think. Novak is a narrow-minded-I’m-always right curmudgeon. When opining he says a lot of bull, but I think the guy is shooting straight. After more than two years, that’s his only public statement…it means something. Furthermore, compare Novak’s record for telling the truth versus any senior White House official, including the big guy, and Novak wins hands down.

Novak just stuck his finger in George Bush’s eye. I suppose the Sun-Times will get a call from the White House and Novak will get Froomkined.

DeLay Pressured Abramoff According to Email

An email message from Jack Abramoff to one of his clients says that Rep Tom DeLay (R-TX) pressured him, in an extraordinary telephone call,  for a $25,000 contribution. The Times notes there is no indication that DeLay knew the email would be sent to Abramoff’s client.

So, the implication is there but no real proof. Given each person’s record, you have to just believe what you want to believe. DeLay would deny it if he in fact did do it, and it certainly would not be beyond Abramoff’s standards to send the email without having talked to DeLay.

My guess is it’s somewhere in between.

Perspectives on Capital Punishment

Josh Marshall has an enlightening post on capital punishment opinions and trends, here and in Europe. He notes that actual public opinion does not necessarily coincide with governmental law and/or policy. Give it a read.

Bush Flip Flop

I thought it was George Bush’s policy to not comment on ongoing investigations .
President Bush said on Wednesday that he thought Representative Tom DeLay, under indictment in Texas, was innocent and that he hoped Mr. DeLay could return to the post of House majority leader.
