Add Oil to McCain’s Unfavorable Polling On 100-Years in Iraq and Stir

I knew from the moment I watched John McCain live on C-SPAN as he made his 100-years-in-Iraq statement that it would be damaging. The only question was, “How much damage?” The press gave McCain a relatively free ride (nothing new) for more than three months; therefore, the damage has been minimal, if even measurable until last week. After running only one week, the DNC’s ad on McCain’s 100-year Iraq policy is proving to be effective.

A new HCD Research poll has found “that independent voters went from 50 percent who saw McCain in a ‘mostly favorable’ light before they saw the ad, to 40 percent after they viewed the ad.” Assuming HCD’s poll is credible, McCain’s gaffe yesterday that the war in Iraq is all about oil should really do a number on his “favorable” rating.

I suppose McCain will whine even more when the DNC releases an ad publicizing his views on oil and the Middle East. If you missed McCain announcing his oil policy, here’s the video.

Abbreviated transcript:

"And I just want to promise you this: My friends, I will have an energy policy, that we will be talking about, which will eliminate our dependence on oil from the Middle East. That will prevent us from having ever to send our young men and women into conflict again in the Middle East."
