Westmoreland: Obama is ‘uppity’

Rep. Lynn Westmorland (R-GA) Classy, real classy! I don’t know who is running against Congressman Westmoreland, but I intend to find out.

From The Hill:

Georgia Republican Rep. Lynn Westmoreland used the racially-tinged term "uppity" to describe Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama Thursday.

Westmoreland was discussing vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin’s speech with reporters outside the House chamber and was asked to compare her with Michelle Obama.

"Just from what little I’ve seen of her and Mr. Obama, Sen. Obama, they’re a member of an elitist-class individual that thinks that they’re uppity," Westmoreland said.

Asked to clarify that he used the word “uppity,” Westmoreland said, “Uppity, yeah.”

Despicable and pathetic.

Uppity is not a racially tinged term. Please check your dictionary before making accusations or blindly following someone else’s lead when it comes to matters of this nature. It makes all of us look bad!

Please, don’t try to insult my intelligence by demonstrating the total absence of yours.

Just because “uppity” may not be defined in Webster’s as a racial slur, does not mean it is not a racial slur. I suppose you’ll argue that terms such as “boy” and “you people” aren’t racial slurs either.

In response to Mark, if you don’t know that “uppity” is a racially charged word then you are not Black or you are very young and unaware of history or both. When the term “uppity” was used to describe a Black person during the Jim Crow era it was usually followed by the “N” word. Being from the South (the home of the worst of Jim Crow), Westmorland’s contention that he didn’t know it had racial overtones is a boldfaced lie.
