The White House has invoked executive privilege for the subpoenas issued to former White House Counsel Harriet Miers and former Political Director Sarah Taylor.
”With respect, it is with much regret that we are forced down this unfortunate path which we sought to avoid by finding grounds for mutual accommodation,” White House counsel Fred Fielding said in [...]

The Constitutional showdown begins.
The House and Senate Judiciary Committees issued subpoenas for Harriet Miers, former White House counsel, and Sara Taylor, former White House political director over the firing of nine U.S. attorneys, and other items crumb trails have led the committees to during their investigations. The subpoenas demand documents and testimony.
“By refusing to cooperate with congressional [...]

There is more to add to the U.S. attorney purge scandal according to a New York Times report from Friday. Debra Wong Yang, the U.S. attorney in Los Angeles was not fired, but resigned in October 2006 “for personal reasons” that are highly suspicious. Ms. Yang, similar to other U.S. attorneys terminations or resignations in [...]

A few moments ago, Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) put the squeeze on Kyle Sampson about the White House abusing the Patriot Act to appoint U.S. attorneys. Sampson, former Chief of Staff to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, clearly implicated members of the White House staff, saying they discussed, for months, bypassing Senate confirmation of U.S. attorneys.
This guy just [...]

The Senate Committee on Judiciary will certainly focus on two items today in Kyle Sampson’s testimony: lying to Senator Schumer and what the definition of “political” is.
Kyle Sampson, Alberto Gonzales former chief of staff, appears to have lied to Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) in a February 22, 2007 letter where Sampson says, “”The Department is not aware [...]

Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) offered an inappropriate proposal, in my opinion, to the White House after the Judiciary Committee approved issuing subpoenas. Specter’s proposal would allow the Bushies,Karl Rove, Harriet Miers, et al, to testify, but to a limited group and not under oath.
Mr. Specter unsuccessfully urged his colleagues to seek compromise with the White [...]

The Senate Judiciary Committee today authorized issuing subpoenas for senior Bush administration officials, compelling them to testify under oath about the purging of eight U.S. attorneys.
Subpoenas will be issued to Karl Rove; Kyle Sampson, Alberto Gonzales former chief of staff; Harriet Miers, former White House counsel; William Kelly, deputy counsel; and J. Scott Jennings, special [...]

Another Republican member of Congress is speaking out against Gonzales. CBS is reporting that Rep Dana Rohrbacher (R-CA) has called for Gonzales termination. Additionally, according to CBS, “one Republican strategist close to the White House said that Gonzales is ‘finished’.”
I will probably have a ton of people ripping me to pieces with this [...]

In a press conference this afternoon, Alberto Gonzales offered a mea culpa, of sorts, and said he did not know squat about the discussions to fire the U.S. attorneys.
Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales said this afternoon that ” I accept that mistakes were made” in the decision to replace some United States attorneys, but he [...]

(Ed. note: see late update at the end of this post)
Although I have not read them all, the documents the DOJ gave the House Judiciary Committee today are revealing. For starters, they confirm a lie Karl Rove recently made.
In a March 8 speech in Little Rock, AK, Karl Rove remarked that Bill Clinton “replaced all 93 U.S. [...]

Responding to requests from the House Committee on the Judiciary, the Department of Justice has released internal documents related to the dismissal of U.S. Attorneys. Read them here.

Another good example of Bush restoring integrity to the White House.
From the New York Times:
The White House was deeply involved in the decision late last year to dismiss federal prosecutors, including some who had been criticized by Republican lawmakers, administration officials said Monday.
Last October, President Bush spoke with Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales [...]

McClatchy continues to reveal more about Karl Rove’s role in the firing of the U.S. Attorney in New Mexico. The White House confirmed yesterday that “Karl Rove served as a conduit for complaints to the Justice Department about federal prosecutors who were later fired.” While the White House confirmed Rove’s involvement, there are disconnects in [...]

I can just envision the shredding of paper and reformatting of hard drives on a pleasant Saturday afternoon.
The House Judiciary Committee plans to take a tour of the White House. Former White House Counselor Harriet Miers and “other unidentified White House officials” will be called to testify before the committee investigating the firing of [...]
