Bush strong-arming allies comes as no surprise

The Washington Post has a piece about George Bush strong-arming allies to gain their support for U.N. resolutions, which would sanction his coveted invasion of Iraq. The piece is based on a book written by Chile’s ambassador to the U.N. at the time of the prelude to war.
In the months leading up to the U.S.-led [...]

Obama’s plan for Iraq

Barack Obama gave a major speech on Iraq today — “The World Beyond Iraq”. I have not read the speech yet, but this is what he provides as the salient points of the plan (via email).

End the war in Iraq, removing our troops at a pace of 1 to 2 combat brigades per month;
Finally finish [...]

Report: 2008 War Costs $144B

The 2008 cost of the war is now estimated at $12 billion per month or $144 billion for the entire year according to a new report. That’s three times the “burn” rate of its earliest years.
Hmm…I seem to recall Donald Rumsfeld said the entire war would cost at most $50 to $60 billion. I also [...]

Preparing for McCain’s 100-year Iraq war plan

Looks like the Bush administration is hoping John McCain will be the next Commander in Chief and wants to give him a little help with his 100-year Iraq war plan.
Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates on Monday publicly endorsed the concept of holding steady the troop levels in Iraq, at least temporarily, after the departure this [...]

U.S. supports attack on Kurds

So, now the U.S. is assisting the Iraqi government strike the Kurds. By and large, the Kurds have not been a problem, except for being a thorn in Mailiki’s side. One of the main reasons Iraq has not been able to implement an oil-sharing revenue law is Maliki’s dislike, to put it mildly, of [...]

What’s wrong with this picture?

This is a perfect example of how poll results can be misleading and depending upon the credibility of the pollster, questions couched to produce desired results. Furthermore the basic principles behind it are highly indicative of how America goes about electing its presidents, and that is woefully bad.

U.S. warns Iraqi government, again

Wielding his extraordinary political power, Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte delivered a powerful warning to the Iraqi government yesterday. He threw down the gauntlet. Kicked sand in their faces. Instilled fear of the Almighty. There can be no doubt the Iraqi government will comply toute de suite. The All Powerful Diplomat delivered words [...]

Operation Iraq Forever

President Bush began his march into Iraq with Operation Iraqi Freedom and will leave the White House, and the next president with Operation Iraq Forever. Bush, Iraq Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, and other Iraqi “officials” signed an agreement today that establishes long-term “common principles to frame [Iraq and the U.S.] future relationship.” The agreement is [...]

The administration’s cut-and-run political strategy for Iraq

George W. Bush has repeatedly used the term “cut-and-run” to characterize Iraq war critics that demanded withdrawal of troops (at any level) from Iraq. But now, facing failure of the primary objective in Iraq – political reconciliation – the Bush administration is, to put it mildly, scaling back on political goals for Iraqi unity. George [...]

Political reconciliation continues to fail in Iraq

On January 10, 2007, President Bush told the nation the violence in Iraq, and specifically in Baghdad, prevented the Iraqi government from achieving its political goals and objectives. To rectify the situation, the president said he would send more U.S. troops (the "surge"), which would create a more secure environment and consequently allow the Iraqi [...]

House Passes Iraq Funding with Timetables

Democratic leaders in Congress continue to make bold, defiant statements regarding legislation recently vetoed by President Bush or legislation he will surely veto in the future. Have the Democrats suddenly gained chutzpah they have not demonstrated previously or are they just employing the same worthless rhetoric of the past?
After Bush vetoed a $606 billion bill [...]

Republicans attack Sanchez

Lindsey Graham and John McCain attacked Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez for comments he made regarding the Bush administration’s incompetence at the Military Reporters and Editors meeting last week.
Time for another Congress to pass another “Shame On You For Attacking The Troops And Military Leaders” resolution.
Hey Rudy, where’s that ad?

Read it and weep

(update below)

I read the transcript of Gen. Sanchez’s remarks at the Military Reporters and Editors Luncheon. The Times piece was revealing, but there’s only so much that can be captured in a 1,000-word piece. The full speech is gut-wrenching; a powerful and incredibly troubling address that is fully capable of rendering tears from the strongest [...]

Transcript Ricardo Sanchez Military Reporters Meeting

Based on several posts I read on other blogs regarding Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez’s address yesterday at the Military Reporters and Editors meeting, I quickly realized reading the transcript is a prerequisite. However, the “official” transcript is very difficult to read (all upper case, etc.). We fixed that.
Military Reporters appears to be the “official” transcript [...]

The Revolt of the Generals

The profound criticism Lt. Gen. Sanchez levied on the Bush administration yesterday will come as no surprise to critics of the administration’s war policies, and it will surely generate an overwhelming denouncement of Sanchez from the Far Right. In all likelihood, one can safely presume the neocon’s response to be conveniently, and intentionally, myopic. It [...]
